We invite applications for a full-time (39-hour) position as

Scientist (m/f/d)

The position is available from July 15^th 2024 and ends on 31^st December 2024. The place of employment is Stralsund, Germany.

The research project PAL-CE is funded by the “Bundesamt für Naturschutz“. The main task is to test acoustic porpoise alert systems (PAL) for long-term use to prevent bycatch of harbour porpoises in gillnets. The project aims to answer, if PALs reduce bycatch in the long term and if their effectiveness changes over time. The reaction of harbour porpoises to PALs deployed in gillnets will be tested in the field and a cooperation with fishermen will be built up. The ideal candidate combines a good knowledge about Harbor porpoises with bio-acoustics.

Your tasks include:

• Acoustic detection of harbour porpoises with multi-channel hydrophone arrays, SoundTraps, C-PODs and F-PODs.
• 3D-localisation of porpoises with acoustic methods (beam forming, time of arrival differences) in collaboration with other researchers.
• Scientific evaluation of acoustic data.
• Support of project management.
• Quality control, documentation of results, and reporting.
• Organization of project and scientific meetings.
• Representation of the museum with focus on research.
• Cooperation with national and international organizations.
• Scientific publication and presentation.

Job requirements:

• PhD or MSc in geoinformatics, bioinformatics, physics, biology or related discipline.
• Experience in ultrasound acoustics.
• Knowledge in R and/or MATLAB for the analysis of acoustic data.
• Willingness to participate in research cruises, also on short notice and on weekends.
• Availability for domestic and international travels.
• Excellent knowledge of German and very good knowledge of English.
• Creativity, high degree of independence.
• Good communication skills within the team and with fisheries’ representatives; ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.

Desired requirements:

• Driver’s license, license for small vessels.
